On behalf of the BVI Chamber of Commerce (BVICoC), I would like to welcome you to the life and adventures of business in the Virgin Islands. As an entrepreneur/business owner, you are now part of the backbone of the economy that provides goods, services, employment, taxes, and community services that drive our country’s economic growth.

To aid you in navigating some of your legal obligations as a business owner, we have developed this new resource tool called the BVI Business Blueprint Start-up Kit with information on company registration, payroll tax, social security, national health insurance and pension plans. This initiative was created in collaboration with the Junior Minister for Trade and Economic Development, Hon. Shereen Flax-Charles, and the goal is to help foster compliance with key business regulations from start-up. At the BVICoC, our mission is “To empower, educate and equip businesses for success and growth” and this is one of many resources we hope to offer you through your business life. Social Security

Social Security is a compulsory insurance plan to which employers, employees, self-employed and voluntary contributors contribute. Social Security is designed to protect insured persons from financial distress by providing partial income replacement when certain contingencies arise.

Inland Revenue

The Government of the VI raises revenue through a wide range of taxes, licenses and fees. The government needs to collect taxes in order to pay for school, healthcare, transportation, fire services, police, etc. The Inland Revenue Department which falls under the Ministry of Finance, is charged with the responsibility of collecting payroll tax, stamp duty, self-drive motor vehicle tax, hotel accommodations tax, land & house tax (property tax), liquor licence, cheque duty, and service charges.

Pensions

A pension is a retirement arrangement in which employees receive a regular payment from their employer after retirement in exchange for their years of work. Employers usually make most or all of the contributions to a pension. A pension plan is also known as a defined benefit plan.
